Time’s Ticking, But It’s Not Too Late to Cancel Grey’s Anatomy and Save Station 19

Looking back, the problems at Grey’s Anatomy started right around the time that Meredith began hanging out with dead people on the beach. While Meredith eventually recovered from her covid-induced coma, the show never really bounced fully back. That – combined with the current lackluster season and news of several actors exiting next season – has us thinking it might be time to pull the plug on the long-running medical drama.

At this point, it would basically be a mercy killing.

Better still, it’s not as if ABC would have to go searching high and low for a replacement. Instead, they could simply un-cancel Station 19, which has for several years now been the superior show.

Our dissatisfaction doesn’t have anything to do with the endless non-exit of leading lady Ellen Pompeo or her alter ego, Meredith Grey, through whose eyes we first were introduced to the world of Seattle Grace/Seattle Grace Mercy West/Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. In fact, we can’t help thinking the show might have been wise to write the character off and let Pompeo remain a behind-the-scenes force.

Two years ago, the show decided a reboot was in order. Introducing a new batch of bright-eyed interns gave the show a new energy and reminded us of why we fell in love with it to begin with… for a while. But talented as the new crop of actors were, their storylines never truly resonated.

The most promising tale involved Simone and Lucas, thanks to the incredible chemistry shared by portrayers Alexis Floyd and Niko Terho. But their story almost immediately devolved into a series of plot points designed to keep them from being together.

Meanwhile, Station 19 managed to lose major players such as Okieriete Onaodowan’s Dean, a major fan favorite, without losing a beat. New characters were seamlessly woven into the canvas, topical issues were explored in a non-nonsense manner and most episodes perfectly balanced humor and drama.

So obviously, ABC had no choice but to give it the axe. (Insert sarcastic eyeroll here.)

With news seemingly coming out daily about changes that will rock Grey’s Anatomy next season, we can’t help but think maybe, just maybe, it’s time to cut the proverbial cord. While that seems unlikely to happen, we – like many other fans – continue to hope that somehow, Station 19 will be saved. If that happens to be at the expensive of the mothership, well… we would be surprisingly ok with that.
