Tracker Star Justin Hartley Shares His Big-Time Arms Workout

JUSTIN HARTLEY’S JOB can be demanding. The former This Is Us star headlines Tracker, a new CBS series following Colter Shaw, a reward seeker and (as the title implies) expert tracker.

According to Hartley, that line of work means that he’s always moving. He calls the project an “action role,” and notes there are components of multiple physically demanding disciplines involved in playing Shaw. “My character is always running or jumping or climbing, fighting—a lot of fighting, turning [and] twisting,” he said when he visited MH HQ to share his Tracker workout routine. He sees aspects of basketball, hockey, MMA and boxing, and police work all rolled up into one package.

Hartley says that his training has evolved over the years, and it’s been a long road. The actor got into fitness young, and started strength training with goals of building up his body when he was in high school since he was a “smaller, skinnier kid.”

Soon enough, however, he realized how important his workout routine was for more than just his muscles. “As you get more and more into working out and fitness, you start to understand it starts impact different phases of your life,” he says. “It can impact your emotional state, it can impact your stress level—it’s way more important than just physique and looking good.”

Hartley shared a quick-hitting arm day workout with the MH crew. He also shared how much he enjoys sipping on a beer between his sets. We can’t recommend for anyone at home to take on that practice themselves—but Hartley has put his own spin on rest periods.

Justin Hartley’s Upper Body Workout

Start with 20 pushups, then rest for 20 seconds. Follow up with 19 reps, then rest for 19 seconds. Continue following this pattern down to one rep and one second.
