Why ‘Law & Order, ‘Law & Order: SVU’ and ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime’ Aren’t New This Week

Don’t worry, Tony Goldwyn’s right around the corner

Law & Order is getting a little rest & relaxation this week.

The beloved NBC franchise is facing a schedule disruption on Thursday, March 7, just six weeks into its long-awaited return from hiatus. The good news is that it’s not alone, as most Thursday primetime broadcasts are being interrupted by the State of the Union address, which begins Thursday at 9 p.m. ET. and will air live on CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox.

The even better news is that when Law & Order returns for new episodes on Thursday, March 14, the flagship series will bring along a special new guest in the form of Tony Goldwyn, the franchise’s newest star.

Sam Waterston made his departure in the Feb. 22 episode, titled “Last Dance,” as Jack McCoy resigned from his post.

Goldwyn, best known as President Fitz from Scandal, will play new District Attorney Nicholas Baxter, and he’ll make his debut in the next new episode, titled “Balance of Power.” The installment explores the death of a Wall Street investor and finds Baxter putting pressure on Price (Hugh Dancy) and Maroun (Odelya Halevi) to make his first case a success.

At 9 p.m., the Law & Order: SVU team deals with a case in which a wife turns her husband in for child pornography, but things grow more complicated with a sudden death. Then at 10 p.m., Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and the squad go rogue in pursuit of a murder case outside their jurisdiction.

In the meantime, fans can relive the timely Season 23 premiere of Law & Order, which explored free speech and the Israel Palestine conflict on a college campus. That episode will re-air on NBC at 8 p.m. this Thursday, ahead of the State of the Union.
